School of Seven Bells – Prince of Peace (2008) / Dirty Projectors – Stillness Is the Move (2009)

Right-thinking people are ambivalent about the constant churn and empty hype of indie hipster scenes. Often the best time to pay attention is a year or two after the fact, when the dust has settled and you can cherry pick from ‘best of’ lists and such.

These two US bands put out highly regarded albums over the last couple of years and, whether by accident or design, have a lot in common – chiefly cut up rhythms, dance-influenced production, and a psych/indie approach to song writing. And glamorous front women who can sing proper. That’s very much okay these days, then.
