St Vincent (AKA Annie Clark) delivers a complex but rewarding follow up to her acclaimed 2007 debut Marry Me. Very much in the thinking person’s chanteuse’ tradition of Cocteau Twins and Goldfrapp, this album is right at home on 4AD.
Unlike those acts, however, where the blokes do the music and the bird does the singing, Ms Clark takes care of not just the writing and performing, but also almost all of the instrumentation, herself. The arrangements are inventively non-rock, often cinematic, reflecting her time as a member of Polyphonic Spree and Sufjan Stevens’ tour band. A little uneven at times, but worth taking the time to get to know.
