New York Dolls – ‘Cause I Sez So (8/10)

The original spirits who brought lipstick and feather boas to punk rock, before punk rock even existed, return, one man down and leatherier than ever, with an album of new material. No repackaged re-issues or lazy ‘best of’s here!

Thankfully, the new songs sound very similar to their classic 70s output: high octane rock informed by classic bubblegum pop, like a sleazier, glammier version of The Rolling Stones. Thirty years on the production is a bit cleaner, the voice a littler wearier (file alongside Tom Waits and Nick Cave under ‘weather-beaten elder statesmen of rock’), but they definitely haven’t lost their mojo.
