The Bees

Eddie Reader
Peacetime
Rough Trade
3/5
Even if you haven’t heard of Eddie reader, you have probably heard her, as the voice behind Fairground Attraction’s perky perennial favourite, ‘Perfect’. This album sees her interpreting a wide range of material in an ‘adult contemporary’ vein: from traditional Scottish folk tunes and interpretations of Robbie Burns, to the acoustic rock of ‘Muddy Waters’ and the title track. The playing and production here are warm and faultless, as is Reader’s voice.

The Bees
Octopus
Virgin
5/5
Recorded in their very own homebuilt studio on the Isle of Wight, British six-piece The Bees successfully summon the spirit of Bob Dylan and The Band’s Basement Tapes on their new album. Octopus is a beautifully chaotic churn of guitars, harmonies, organ swells, harmonicas, and the occasional Mariachi horn section, held together by well-crafted songwriting and funky shambolic percussion. Highly recommended.
